Massachusetts DOR Warns of New Tax Refund Text Scam
Massachusetts taxpayers are the latest target of a growing wave of text scams. The Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) reports that residents have received messages claiming they are due a tax refund. These texts include a link and ask the recipient to confirm their banking information in order to receive the money.
This is not how the DOR communicates. The agency does not send text messages about tax refunds. If you receive one of these messages, do not click on any links. Block the sender, delete the text, and inform your IT department where appropriate.
It can be difficult to know what is legitimate and what is not, particularly when it comes to taxes. If you receive a message or letter that looks suspicious, or if someone reaches out claiming to represent the DOR without referencing your specific tax account, the safest step is to confirm directly with the department.
Our team is monitoring these developments to help keep you informed. Tax season already brings enough complexity; deceptive scams should not add to that. We encourage clients to stay cautious, verify any questionable communication, and reach out if they have concerns about the authenticity of tax-related messages.
